Annual Meeting

The annual meeting was held at Deanna Brougher's house on Thursday October 9, 2025. SATA members present: Deanna and Bill Brougher; Dave Engle; Ski Schanher; Ruth Addis; MaryAnn LaHaise; Greg Clements; Molly van Beysterveldt; Alan Watson; Mark Beckdahl; Kathi Malina; Dan and Judy McGregor; Rob Hagelberg; and Kevin Rose. Dinner/drinks provided.

Finance Report

Alan Watson presented highlights:

Membership and Donations to date $3171.00
Ohio Valley annual grant received $2957.00 (Goal is to spend approximately $6100.00 annually to support youth and adult tennis in Clark, Champaign and Greene Counties)

Secretary Report

Molly van Beysterveldt reported that membership stayed approximately the same. SATA is a 501(c)(3) so all dues and donations are tax deductible. It was approved to remove the Household membership level and keep only an Individual Adult (21+) membership level for $15.00. The need for 2 membership chairs was discussed… a local and an out-of-town chair because we have a lot of out-of-town members committed to Springfield continuing its rich tennis tradition.

SATA Website

Our new website (www.sataohtennis.org) was launched in early November 2025. The site will let us better communicate with members and the community at large. It will also serve as a landing site for news, upcoming tennis clinics and other social events.

For now members (new or current) cannot pay their dues online. There is a form to request more information on how to join or renew. As we "spin up" the next version of the site, we plan to offer online membership and donation payments.

2025 Highlights

May 7, 2025
SATA and National Trail and Parks hosted a free youth tennis clinic on May 7 from 5:30 to 7:00 at the Snyder Park courts. We hosted 32 kids and introduced them to the sport as well as provided pizza, waters and cookies. Instructor cost was $150.00 for Josh Mabry and his assistant. Food provided by SATA at a cost of $86.28.

June 2 - July 17, 2025
Six weeks of Midwest Youth Team Tennis (MYTT) and tennis instruction was provided by Josh Mabry and assistant Saul Alvarez at Snyder Park. SATA paid $20.00 of the $40.00 hourly rate for Josh and $10.00 of the $15.00 hourly rate for Saul for a total SATA contribution of $1840.00. We also provided 3 rackets at a cost of $75.00. Lesson breakouts 12 children 5-7 years old; 34 kids age 8-12; and 10 age 13-17. MYTT programs had 24 students in grades 1-3; and 5 in grades 4-6.

June 16 - 20 & June 23 - 27, 2025
Ridgewood School hosted 3 Midwest Youth Team Tennis (now called Swing, Hit & Ace) programs and 1 Preschool program. Preschool program had 9 students and we were blessed to have 6 volunteers helping. K-2nd grade had 11 students; 3-5th grade had 17 students and 6-9th grade had 9 students.

Greg Clements was the instructor and SATA paid him $40 / hour for 35 hours of instruction for total of $1400.00.

The assistant was Aiden Yeager and we paid him $15.00 an hour for 18 hours for total of $270.00. We provided 2 super volunteers with $25 gift certificates for coming back the second week in all the crazy high heat!.

The Ridgewood 3 MYTT programs are provided as a fundraiser for Ridgewood’s Summer Enrichment program.

June 2025
Provided $175.00 in support of Urbana HS YTT fundraiser. This program is provided by Urbana coaches and volunteers.

June 7 - 28, 2025
Start/Restart for adults held at Snyder Park with 5 participants. This program was run by Alex Sarihan and paid for by National Trail.

Beavercreek Clay Courts
Ran a successful Red Ball tournament with 14 entries.

Yellow Springs Program
Unfortunately, the program was canceled due to lack of enrollment; only 6 students registered. Discussion on improved advertising of program and possibly offering the program later in the summer.

First JTT High School Event

The first Junior Team Tennis (JTT) High School event was held on July 31, 2025 at Springfield High School. We had 16 students registered and SATA paid $3.15 per student registry fee.

It was a very rainy day but 14 students hung in there and we ended up having a great day! All students competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Greg and Deanna volunteered to run the event and had great assistance from Emily Kahoun, Springfield High School Coach. Students were treated to donuts, pizza, and waters. They also received a $15.00 for participating and helping to dry courts! 1 $50 gift certificate was drawn by one student. Total cost for the program was $448.18. In addition, each high school that had 3 participants received a case of balls. There were 3 high schools that received cases: Northwestern, Springfield High; and Yellow Springs. Cost $210.00

Our Next Area of Focus

SATA will provide a stipend not to exceed $1000.00 to Emily Kahoun to run the JTT high school program over multiple weeks starting summer of 2026. The stipend amount will depend on number of sessions and number of participants.
The SATA board approved the monthly allocation for Phase I of an Association Management System (AMS). The new domain and current website are a proof-of-concept to help SATA visibility. A Phase II AMS will handle dues collection, newsletters, program advertisement; more frequent communication, etc. The proposal limits the approved amount to $1500.00 annually and will be utilized for a year on a trial basis.
Deanna Brougher proposed donating $500.00 to Indian Valley to assist with physical facility needs and replacement of needed equipment.
Greg Clements proposed SATA donate $20.00 to Indian Valley per each dual 2026 member of SATA and Indian Valley. Seconded by Alan Watson. Discussion ensued that Indian Valley is where most adult play is happening in Springfield, and we would like to attract more members from the Indian Valley group and provide more support for adult play. Even though the proposed donated amount is more than the dues for SATA, most members joining SATA send in some extra as a donation. Signage will be placed at the Indian Valley courts linking how members can join SATA and Indian Valley, and each organization will communicate this opportunity to their members. 2026 will be a trial year and we will revisit at the next annual meeting.
